Below is the U of C's standard policy. However, for SAHLA, we want to be
flexible due to the nature of the program. If students withdraw before the
course start date, we will charge the $40 administration fee. Once the
course has started, we will *not* be issuing a credit for any withdrawals. You
can allow a substitute from another school if you wish. This will ensure that
we have the class list as accurate as possible and run a class based on
sufficient numbers to cover costs. Also, as a courtesy to the instructors, pls
have your registrations in at least 1 week before the course start date for
their planning.
The following refund policy and deadlines apply. If notice of a student's
withdrawal from a course is received:
* At least 21 days before the course start date, the registrant will
receive a full refund
* Between 20 and 7 days before the course start date, the registrant
will receive a refund, less a $40 administrative fee * 6 days or fewer
before the course start date, a refund will not be issued
Teaching Second Languages
Teaching International and Heritage Languages (TIHL)
Opportunities abound in teaching second languages. If you are
Teaching an international/heritage language, our
flexible certificate programs are ideal for you. These part-time programs
offer an innovative curriculum delivered by university-calibre
experts. Programs offered online can be taken from anywhere with a
computer and reliable Internet connection.
Who should take this program?
If you are a new or aspiring teacher looking for immediate classroom
application, here or abroad, start with the Level 1 certificate. It will
give you the fundamentals of teaching second languages, classroom
basics and knowledge of teaching skills and systems to work in the
field with confidence.
For those wanting to gain a more in-depth understanding of language
theory and expand upon practical classroom skills, take the four
required courses from TSL Level 1 plus four additional intermediate
courses. This will provide 250 hours of comprehensive study for those
wanting to proceed to the next level of competencies in the TSL field.
Timeline
Students who take one or two courses per session can complete the
Level 1 certifi cate in either specialization in one to one-and-a-half
years, and Level 2 in approximately two to three years.
Admission
Prerequisites are not required for acceptance to these certificate programs.
However, it is important to note that some teaching positions
in
Canada and abroad will require a degree.
Students
who have not taken online courses through U of C Continuing
Education will be required to take the course, Learning Online, prior
to taking any online courses. This short online course will prepare you
for online study.

Courses
All of these courses are taught at least once in the academic year, and
are offered specific to IHL specializations.
TSL 127 TSL Fundamentals—IHL | 40 Hours
Get introduced to the field of learning and teaching a second language.
Become familiar with the terminology used generally in the realm of
second language teaching and specifically in the Teaching Second
Language Certificate program. Then focus on principles of classroom
management and lesson planning. This will include concepts such
as increasing student interaction in the classroom, using effective
teacher language and logical staging of various lesson types.
Prerequisite: Learning Online
TSL 128 Teaching Skills and Systems I - IHL
30 Hours
Explore both theoretical and practical aspects of specific skills in
learning a second language. Review what is known about the reading
and writing process including communicating well to be heard
and understood, and reading and writing for specific purposes. Next
review what is known about teaching grammar in a second language
while concentrating on pedagogical techniques. Cover critical and
innovative approaches to grammar and learn specific strategies for
teaching grammar in a second language. Finally, cover systematic and
principled procedures for teaching vocabulary.
Prerequisites: Learning Online, TSL Fundamentals, and Linguistics
TSL 129 Teaching Skills and Systems II
30 Hours
Become aware of current classroom techniques that promote listening
and speaking. Be introduced to the communicative method of second
language learning through group discussion, modeling, games and
activities. Then, discover how sounds are produced in a variety of
languages and what practical teaching techniques you can use to
correct common problems with pronunciation in a second language.
Gain familiarity with the international phonetic alphabet.
Prerequisites: Learning Online, TSL Fundamentals, and Linguistics
TSL 130 Linguistic Structures—IHL | 30 Hours
Even in a communicative context, second language teachers need a
basic awareness about the structure of language and possible differences
between their first language and the second language they are
teaching. The three basic language structures of phonology (sound
structure), morphology (word structure), and syntax (sentence structure)
will be illustrated on a number of levels.
Prerequisite: Learning Online
TSL 124 TSL—Level 2 | 30 Hours
Examine theories of first and second language acquisition and consider
how learners’ first language affects their learning of another
language. Discuss the unique challenges of teaching children, youth
and adults, as well as teaching students at different proficiency levels.
Learn concrete approaches for reaching learners with various learning
styles and help students to develop their autonomy and learning
strategies. Finally, consider principles and techniques for effective
verbal and written correction and feedback.
Prerequisites: Level 1 Certificate courses
TSL 104TSL—Methodology | 30 Hours
Familiarize yourself with second language teaching methodology in
the last two centuries. First, an historical overview of the different
approaches including grammar translation, the direct and series
methods, audiolingualism and so forth will be examined. Then,
learn more about using newer methods such as Communicative
Language Teaching (CLT), Task-Based Learning (TBL), and the Lexical
Approach.
Prerequisites: TSL Level 1 Certificate Courses
TSL 125 Assessment and Materials
Development | 30 Hours
Analyze classroom assessment strategies, processes, issues and
trends in the assessment of student language learning. Perspectives
of assessment from learner, teacher, standardized tests and
workplace needs will be addressed, as will the functions of formative
and summative assessment. The role of assessment in learner motivation,
accountability, and communication of learner ability will be
addressed with reference to participants’ real classroom experiences.
Gain a working knowledge of large-scale, standardized language
tests. Then focus on key criteria used in assessing and selecting materials.
Familiarize yourself with the main types of materials currently
available, and examine the range of teaching possibilities with these
materials. Finally, experiment with developing your own materials to
meet second language classroom needs.

TSL 126 Culture in Language Teaching
30 Hours
Knowing a second language also means knowing a second culture.
Learn what the term culture means and the purpose of knowing a
culture for second language learners. Study how to integrate culture
and intercultural explorations into the learning experience. Finally,
examine the influences of culture on teaching and learning in both
multi- and mono-cultural contexts. Discuss theory and practical elements
of integrating peoples of different cultures.
Prerequisite: TSL Level 1 Certificate Courses
